Active Affect
Active affects are emotions that arise from adequate understanding — they always involve joy and increase your power.
In depth
When you are the adequate cause of your emotional states — when your affects flow from your own understanding rather than from external forces — you experience active affects. These are always forms of joy or desire grounded in knowledge. The scientist's delight in discovery, the artist's creative flow, the thinker's clarity — these are active affects.
Why it matters
Active affects cannot be excessive, because they are grounded in understanding. They represent genuine freedom — not freedom from emotion, but freedom through emotion that arises from your own adequate ideas.
